I’m very guilty of doing this as a kid. I mean like OCD level dam making as a kid. My friend and I damned/diverted an entire section of river over the course of 2 summers. You read that right – two summers. We were thinking very long term when the project started, but we pulled it off and actually created an amazing area for turtles, frogs, cray fish, and every kind of river critter you can imagine. I grew up to be an environmental scientist and to the best of my knowledge, we didn’t displace any species, and definitely didn’t have any ecologically sensitive species in that stream, but we absolutely made huge changes to that section of river.
Not sure why we were so crazed by this goal, but my parents were always wondering why my shoes were never dry.
Years later, I always felt a bit destructive for doing that, but I’ve been back there as an adult and cannot believe the level of change we made to that area.
Two 11 year old kids over 2 summers can do some serious landscape changes.
