Coolest story of the day:
When we first arrived, we met a lady named Nancy who told us she was from Minnesota, and her friend from Dallas. Nancy was in her 60’s and not in the best physical shape.
We met them again and again on the trail. They were friendly, funny ladies, and Nancy was a rock star. She struggled up some of the more difficult and rocky portions of the hike, but the Scouts (all of them only eleven years old) went out of their way to encourage her and give her tips on where to place her foot next. The trail was very crowded today, so we encountered Nancy at several points. When she safely made it out of one of the most difficult portions of the hike, she thanked one of the boys and cried and gave him a Covid-safe masked side hug. It was a pretty cool moment.
Also, this was our first hike since February, so we were all fighting against our quarantine bodies. My son especially (the one in the pic) was struggling during the final mile of the hike, when temps reached 91 degrees Fahrenheit. One of the other boys came alongside my son and cheered him on. We all rallied around him to encourage him to keep going and no one wandered too far ahead of him. At the end of the hike, I told the other little boy that he was Sam Wise Gamgee for my son’s Frodo. Haha they were both troopers.
