  • Maxim Integrated’s latest IC release promises to offer enhanced temperature monitoring  for applications and products that are temperature-sensitive
  • The company’s other IC allows multiple device connection that is powered by a single wire bus, which reduces wiring complexity

Any temperature variation, as little as two degrees Celsius can adversely impact products and processes, creating issues in delivering quality products and impairing the bottom line. At the same time, sensitive processes and applications often require a multiple-device connection in a space-constrained system for measuring temperature and protect processes, assets and equipment from unacceptable variation. Traditional solutions can connect up to eight devices and require an additional wire for power.

To assist designers of cold-chain pharma, medical monitoring and other temperature-sensing applications overcome these challenges and achieve reliable, highly accurate and robust system operation, Maxim Integrated has introduced two new Essential Analog ICs: The MAX31889 and the MAX31825.

While the MAX31889 digital temperature sensor replaces expensive RTDs in precise temperature-sensitive applications by offering a combination of high-accuracy and less power consumption, the MAX31825 digital temperature sensor enables up to 64 devices per bus, all powered by the 1-Wire® bus, to drastically reduce wiring complexity.

Features of MAX31889:

⦁ Highly accurate and low power (35 per cent less consumption)
⦁ Robust protection of customer assets
⦁ Offers precision measurement of ± 0.25 degrees Celsius accuracy across a wide temperature range
⦁ Low-cost

Features of MAX31825:

⦁ Reduces design and wiring complexity by allowing connection up to 64 devices, all to a 1-Wire bus
⦁ The 1-Wire functionality improves system robustness by delivering an 8x reduction in wiring (compared to conventional two or three-wire solutions).
⦁ Achieves precision of ±1 degrees Celsius accuracy.
⦁ Simplifies system design (each device has a unique code which can be optionally programmed with a location address).
⦁ Supports longer battery life and extends operational uptime
⦁ Low standby current of 2.5µA

“These temperature sensor ICs epitomize the values of precision measurement and robust protection from Maxim Integrated’s Essential Analog portfolio. Our customers can measure temperature with precision, and thereby protect their assets from potential damage by heat or cold,” said David Andeen, executive director for the Core Products Group at Maxim Integrated.

“These Essential Analog products by Maxim Integrated enable manufacturers to make their operations and supply chains more reliable, helping to ensure quality to their customers and savings to their bottom line,” said Colin Bamden, principal analyst, Semicast Research.

The MAX31889 comes in a 6-pin µDFN package and the MAX31825 in a 6-bump WLP. The MAX31889EVSYS# and MAX31825EVSYS1# evaluation kits are also available.
