Polestar, the performance and EV luxury division of parent company Geely—closely related to corporate sibling Volvo and Lynk & Co—is recalling every single one of its all-electric Polestar 2 models to fix a serious issue. That’s 2,189 vehicles in total, Automotive News Europe reports. None of the vehicles recalled are from the U.S., but that’s only because none have been delivered here yet.
The issue is troubling. A software glitch could cause the vehicles to lose power and stop while driving, which is clearly a safety problem. This has affected three vehicles already, according to Polestar, but there have apparently not been any accidents or injuries as a result. Most of the affected vehicles are in Norway and Sweden.
The software problem apparently has to do with the battery control module. There is a workaround, but not a permanent fix, for those cars experiencing the issue. Getting out of the Polestar 2, locking it, and waiting 10 minutes apparently allows the car to restart and drive.
Polestar won’t roll out its OTA software updates until early next year, so this repair will require a dealership visit—but Polestar noted in comments to ANE that this sort of issue could be corrected with an OTA update in theory.
A representative for Polestar issued the following statement to MotorTrend: “We issued a voluntary safety recall for Polestar 2 after we investigated, verified and developed a solution for an issue reported by a small number of customers. A fault in the logic of the Battery Energy Control Module requires a manual software update to be rectified. A total of 2,189 potentially affected registered customer vehicles in Europe and China are being recalled.”
